How far in advance do good cooks put herbs in tomato based spaghetti sauce?

Posted on September 6th, 2010 by admin in herbs | 10 Comments »

I´ve heard some herbs go in the sauce first thing, while some herbs should go in the sauce 5 minutes before serving.

Depends if they are dried throw them in at the begginging and let them simmer but if they are fresh wait untill about 5 minutes till the end so they still hold some flawor and look purdyy lol

Growing vegetables, herbs and plants inside, no direct sunlight?

Posted on September 3rd, 2010 by admin in herbs | 4 Comments »

I would love to grow vegetables in pots in my patio area and herbs on my windowsill, however my kitchen windowsill opens into a completely enclosed patio area (it might as well be an extra room) so there is no natural sunlight available. Does anyone know if/how I can grow vegetables and herbs in pots with no direct sunlight? Which ones should I choose?

Thanks :)

It’s difficult to grow herbs with no sun light but you can use full spectrum fluorescent tubes and hang the lights a few inches above the plants for greater light intensity.

I want to grow herbs in my garden window, can I grow garlic on my own with them too?

I’ve never grown herbs before but we’ve got this nifty garden window in the kitchen and I want to grow basil, cillantro, oregano, maybe some thyme. First off, are these herbs compatible to grow in close proximity? Secondly, how difficult is it to grow my own garlic? And lastly, can I grow garlic near these herbs in the same garden window?

All these herbs are compatible but put them in different pots or they’ll try to compete one another out of existence. Garlic is pretty easy to grow but it doesn’t seem to taste as strong as supermarket garlic. Just start with one clove and it will sprout green onion-like stalks out the pointy end.

What flowering plants and herbs do hummingbirds favor?

Posted on August 27th, 2010 by admin in herbs | 7 Comments »

I have a flowerbed under my hummingbird feeder. I would like to add some additonal flowers and herbs that hummingbirds like.

You will attract many hummingbirds if you create a small garden environment by your feeder.

Use plants of varying sizes, texture, and bright color. For example, hummingbirds are attracted to Pentas, a small colorful annual (Zone 7 Maryland). In the mid-height range, use salvias, mint or sage. For your tallest plants, select Lavendar, Butterfly Weed and Bee Balm.

I have a garden with many Lantana plantings, and it sometimes seems like a hummingbird "airport."

Another thought, the colors of red hibiscus and zinnia plants really attract them to the garden.

Use organics for pest control, and mist the garden for the Hummingbird’s.

Great idea to combine flowering plants and Herbs!

What are the best herbs to grow in a shady area?

Posted on August 23rd, 2010 by admin in herbs | 7 Comments »

I have a large strip of garden bed that sits in the shade, and need something to grow there. Herbs are preferable, but anything else comparable will do.
I live in Zone 9 and it is a pretty shady spot. Not much sunshine at all.

Herbs are weeds so depending on where you live just about any herb will grow in shade as long as they get some sun.

I have two huge bushes of Rosemary; one gets a lot of sun and the other gets a lot of shade.
Mint will grow just about anywhere and is a rodent repellant.

If you plant mint in your herb garden, it will literally take over and can make other herbs have a funk.

I learned the hard way to always grow mint in a container or in a bed where I don’t want anything else to grow.

In a real hot climate, basil will grow well in part shade. Straight-up noon sun tends to make basil wilt.

Herbs are weeds so don’t grow them in rich, dense soil. Mixing a bag of sand and mulch into the dirt before planting the herbs works well in my herb garden.

I only use Fish emulsifier for fertilizer (stinky!!) and cedar mulch to keep the bugs out.

I also like to grow catnip and if you use a wire cage, like those for tomato plants, the neighborhood cats can enjoy it but not kill it.

What are good digestion herbs and vitamins? Are there any good multi vitamins focused on digestion?

Posted on August 16th, 2010 by admin in herbs | 6 Comments »

I have heard about so many herbs and vitamins out that will help with digestion but what is best? And is there an multi vitamin that is geared to digestion? Is Phillips colon health good?

Multi-vitamins are not typically geared to one specific area. There are some all natural supplements that are specific to the digestive system.
Here are a couple of them.

Optiflora (Probiotic & Prebiotic) – Provides for the normal, healthy balance of intestinal microflora. Also provides gamma-tocopherol, a nutrient associated with colon health. Safe for all ages with no side effects.

EZ-Gest – Uses multiaction plant-based enzymes derived through natural fermentation to optimize digestion of all food groups.

I’m sorry, I’m not familiar with Phillips colon health.

Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions

I am making schnitzel tonight, and do not want a breading on it-I am trying to cut back on carbs.

My favorite is the way the Greeks make pork.
Olive oil, Oregano, lemon, salt and pepper.
