THE TEA PARTY & THE CIRCUS – Final Healthcare Reform Protest

On March 16, 2010, Tea Partiers from around the country gathered (in disappointing numbers) in front of the Capitol building for their final protest against health care reform. Also in town, appropriately, was Barnum & Bailey’s actual circus. The protestors voiced their usual conspiratorial concerns about healthcare reform: that it was a government takeover and more government, of course, equals less freedom; that it would euthanize seniors too expensive to treat; and that the bill would sink the nation into irrecoverable debt, despite its actually reducing the deficit by more than $100-billion over the next ten years. Averse to facts, no one interviewed was able to cite evidence for their false beliefs about the reform proposal, and instead suggested we seek the “truth” from Glenn Beck and Fox News.

THE PROPOSAL
The healthcare reform proposal being advanced in congress, while imperfect, would bring long overdue changes to a broken system. Far from being rushed, the proposals that make up this reform have been debated for years, and this congress has been working on a bill for many months. It’s time for an up or down vote on reform.

The proposal will expand healthcare access to over 30-million uninsured Americans, make healthcare more affordable for everyone, hold insurance companies more accountable, end discrimination against Americans with pre-existing conditions, and help stabilize our budget and economy by reducing the deficit by over $100-billion in the next ten years.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
You can make a difference in the health care debate without leaving your bedroom. So stop typing that narcissistic Facebook status, pause your Mafia Wars game, and actually do something in reality to advance the cause you support by calling your representative. This is so easy. Many people are timid about making phone calls, but a phone call to your representative now could save you a series of phone calls to an uncooperative insurance company in the future. Too lazy to look up your representative’s number? This website makes it even easier–it will find the number, call it for you, and then call your cell phone to connect you. Tell your representative’s office that you support comprehensive health care reform, and urge them to support the public option.

Your Representative needs to hear from you NOW – call them now and tell them to vote YES!

    @MrsDetermined1 in addition, I don’t see why I should be forced to save up for what other people are freely given. Not earned, not born into, given. Just because I break out in a rash when I get stressed doesn’t mean an InsCo should have the right to put me in that position, and that’s what a large part of this bill was about.

    @samichalfy Hi- I …
    @samichalfy Hi- I would like to know that I won’t be financially ruined if you get in an accident or come down with a disease. To make sure I’m not responsible for that and so it doesn’t happen to others, I’ve actually lived below my means for years, and saved money. I also pay for insurance myself. I’ve sacrificed to do this. Not everyone is willing to make these choices.

  7. samichalfy Says:

    @chuggdog I …
    @chuggdog I absolutely agree. But it doesn’t help when we try to do that and all these tea partiers and extreme conservatives view it as a “socialist takeover” when they don’t even know what they’re talking about, or people like you calling ppl like me parasites and moochers and leaches or telling me to “earn it”, when I would LOVE to even be able to pay into an insurance plan. All this rhetoric with no factual basis is sickening.

  8. chuggdog Says:

    @samichalfy …
    @samichalfy regulate the corrupt Insurance companies. Make it afforable for all. Period. One of the most corrupt legal businesses out there is the insurance industry.

  9. samichalfy Says:

    @chuggdog How on …
    @chuggdog How on earth are people supposed to “earn their own healthcare” when InsCo’s deny them or try and charge them a ridiculous amount for coverage so basic it’s laughable?

  10. samichalfy Says:

    @mboston76 Not to …
    @mboston76 Not to mention if I cant pay for my emergency services (an ambulance ride alone is ~ $8k) the cost gets absorbed by the hospital which results in higher costs for InsCo’s, which results in higher costs for YOU. Sorry, but I would like to know I wouldn’t be financially ruined if I get in an accident or come down w cancer or some debilitating disease, or even a bad flu. Emergency care isn’t free, I don’t know what la-la land you’re living in.

  11. samichalfy Says:

    @mboston76 Sure, …
    @mboston76 Sure, I’ll get emergency care if I need it, and then be stuck with thousands of dollars in hospital bills. But I would really like to be able to go to a general practicioner and pick up antibiotics when I’m sick, or my gyno to get a pap smear to make sure I’m healthy, or my dermotologist when my psoriasis acts up. Each of those visits would cost me $100 just to get seen, not to mention the cost of any lab work I may need done.

  12. mboston76 Says:

    @samichalfy Trust …
    @samichalfy Trust me….if you go to a hospital and don’t have health insurance, you will get treated. So, why do you say you would “love to get my own healthcare” when you can already get free healthcare in this country if you need it. Am I missing something?

  13. mboston76 Says:

    @TitaniaLaFey …
    @TitaniaLaFey Socialism= taking from people who work hard and make an honest living and giving it to people who may not have worked as hard or not as talented or even lazy. What’s wrong with capitalism……..if you need something, earn it, otherwise, quit whining!

    Where do you turn …
    Where do you turn if you think that our government needs to stop deficit spending and start paying off large chunks of the national debt? If we do get “healrth care for all” it seems like that would either bankrupt us or require massive tax increases. The reason for USA’s economic success is low taxes and a population with disposable income. Our country needs to return to a balanced budget, low taxes, eliminate social programs, and make personal responsibility a focal point.

    @chuggdog You idiot, Health Reform is about LETTING people get insurance in the first place, moron.

    What will you say when your premium goes up 48% in one year, or you deductible goes up to $10,000 or your lifetime max gets set to 100,000. It doesn’t take much and your FAT will be the Country Hospital begging for care.

    I have yet to see an athletic Teabitch, all Obese, old, grey and STUPID.
