Should Herbs be grown in a pot or directly in the soil?
or is it different for different herbs?
It is different for different herbs. Any kind of mint you want to make sure you contain or it will overtake your garden in no time – it spreads like crazy! Larger perennials do good in large containers or in the ground, if you need to move them when its very cold containers work great. I prefer less containers and more plants in raised beds, to many containers can take on a very cluttered look if you are not careful. Raised beds, even just a foot, work great! They really save your back a great deal and are easy to amend, water, and provide great drainage. It also makes sense – when you have raised beds you do not walk on the planting area which can greatly compress it and cause problems.

The small leafy herbs grow fine either way. Bushy herbs like Rosemary will work in a large container, if they are kept trimmed back, but do better in the ground.

I’ve grown them in direct soil with no problem. Growing anything in a pot requires more watering.
I had a old wheelbarrow and grew herbs there. Gave a nice decorative touch to the backyard.

I do mine in both. Perennials I do in the soil, annuals I do in pots.
