How many nutrition classes do you take when you’re becoming a doctor?
I was told that in four years of medical school, the average doctor only takes one class on nutrition. Is that about accurate?
Be careful with stuff like that where you hear those things. Medical schools have slightly different ways of presenting the body of information that a physician needs to master, i.e. different ways of teaching. Often matters about nutrition may be introduced in a course that’s not called by that name, but so long as that information is supplied, that’s the key.
Medical curricula are always looking for shortcomings, and most MD schools do a fine job at filling in any holes (real or perceived) in their respective curricula. Nutrition, is, indeed on of the areas thats getting more and more highly integrated into curricula at most schools.
Many medical schools don’t have traditional courses like in undergrad, but use a different model for introducing information, e.g. Harvard and such, so it’s tough to give you a number that’s accurate or that represents the reality of what you want to know.
Should Herbs be grown in a pot or directly in the soil?
Should Herbs be grown in a pot or directly in the soil?
or is it different for different herbs?
It is different for different herbs. Any kind of mint you want to make sure you contain or it will overtake your garden in no time – it spreads like crazy! Larger perennials do good in large containers or in the ground, if you need to move them when its very cold containers work great. I prefer less containers and more plants in raised beds, to many containers can take on a very cluttered look if you are not careful. Raised beds, even just a foot, work great! They really save your back a great deal and are easy to amend, water, and provide great drainage. It also makes sense – when you have raised beds you do not walk on the planting area which can greatly compress it and cause problems.
Is there a natural non-chemical way to deter spiders from living in my backyard?
This year my backyard has become a spider metropolis, we have never had this problem before. I don’t mind them in my garden but they are all over my deck too. I have been hosing them off with water but they come back! I don’t like spiders!
Last year I lost a batlle with aphids, I am not losing against the spiders too!
typo: batlle=battle
Spiders taste with the tips of their "feet". So you need to lay or spray something they don’t like. Cedar chips, moth balls, salt. Also, I heard from a spider wrangler that they HATE Lemon Pledge. So I bought a case of it and spray it all along the doors and windows of my house. I have no more spiders inside. I don’t know how effective it would be outside.

What are some healthy simple recipes?
I have $400 to spend for the next 4 months on food. I am planning to eat healthy with vegetables, fruits, and avoiding the junk food such as canned food etc… I don’t know many recipes, the ones i know require a lot of time and money, which i don’t have. I am looking for simple healthy recipes, ones that take maybe 5-15min to make? For lunch and dinner. Thanks!
Pan Fried Potato! Not fried in the ‘cover in flour and plop in the oil’ sense, but microwaved to cook and then crisped up in a pan lightly coated with extra virgin olive oil. This is a favorite of mine for absolutely any meal, it takes 10-15 minutes tops!
Pan Fried Potato
1 potato
1-2 tsp extra virgin olive oil
spray butter
Optional seasonings and herbs:
garlic powder
salt and pepper
dried oregano
dried parsley
dried basil
–Cut the potato into 1/2 inch chunks (I make mine smaller and thinner because it cuts down on microwave time). Microwave in a microwave-safe bowl for 3-4 minutes. While potato is microwaving, coat a pan with oil and some spray butter for extra flavor and heat over medium heat. Put potato into pan straight from microwave and toss a little bit to coat with oil. Allow to crisp and then toss again. Allow potato to cook in pan for approximately 5 minutes. Season with seasonings of choice right before removing from pan. Serve immediately.
Shanghai Noodles
3 tablespoons oil
1-2 tablespoon sesame oil
2 cups shredded cabbage (or Chinese cabbage)
1/2 cup chopped green onions
8 ounces angel hair pasta
2-4 tablespoons soy sauce (to taste)
4 ounces sliced cooked chicken breasts (optional)
1 can bean sprouts, drained (optional)
–Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. While pasta is cooking, heat oil and sesame oil in skillet and saute cabbage and green onion for about 5 minutes. Add pasta and soy sauce (also chicken and/or bean sprouts if desired) and heat through.
I also like quesadillas and quiche. Look up recipes on www.recipezaar.com for vegetable quiche, garden quiche, spinach quiche, mushroom quiche, broccoli quiche, veggie quesadillas, etc.
Enjoy!
What are some good transferable skills for the healthcare industry?
I’ve been recently laid off, and my experience is in media production/creation (using Flash Actionscript/Adobe Illustrator. I hear the best industry to get hired in during a recession is in the healthcare industry. What transfrerable skills are sought after in the healthcare field?
I am sorry that you were laid off from work but i advise you to go into a career that you enjoy and not just for the money. But chose a career that make you love what you do. There are many jobs and the medical career but you need to talk to college counsel for career guidance.

How do you know the best form of weight loss for yourself versus others?
I am 31 years old. I have two kids and have gained excessive weight after both of them. I had a cessarian with the first and natural with the second. I’m pear shaped so it’s mostly in my hips and buttocks. I have a desk job so I sit a lot and I’m always too tired feeling to work out at night. I’ve been on every diet under the sun to only gain it all back. I’ve tried numerous excersises also. Over the counter weight loss pills or energy pills give me a racing heart. When I do loose weight I get the saggy belly that hangs between the legs when I sit and bend so how would I be able to find out how would be the best way to loose weight effectivly for myself and my body type and keep the sagging away. Please help.
ok, first….stay away from the ‘diet pills’ — they are ALL CRAP, EVERY ONE OF THEM.
they all say, ‘use with ANY sensible diet and exercise program’…and the reason for this is that it is the sensible diet and exercise programs that are responsible for the weight loss, not the stupid pills.
as for sensible diet part — and i’m not being funny here (it’s what works) stop eating so much. most of us have 2 double whoppers with cheese, or super size our meals etc. Just stop eating as much — 2 hot dogs instead of four, 1 whopper instead of 2, reduce calories gradually but noticeable. After a week or so, start throwing in the baked potato or salad instead of fries etc.
Just start eating less and less, then start eating healthier. Find good healthy things you can eat a lot of. And don’t worry about the ‘fat pig’ comments or looks — don’t do it because of that, do it for your other reasons — your life — you’re only 31 and have to live long and healthy to take care of your kids.
Work in the exercise program in whatever form you can — walk more (stairs instead of elevators, park a little further away and work), take walks with kids, pets, start doing floor exercises, plays sports with kids etc. You don’t have to join a gym or do 5 hrs of fitness a day — just more than you are now.
GOOD LUCK — eat less, eat healthy, start exercising, and exercise more.
What type of medicine should I buy for a sore throat, sinuses, and overall cold symptoms?
I never really used any type of Cold & Sinus medicine. Any suggestions based on your own experiences?
based on your symptoms, i would recommend anything that has a pain reliever and nasal decongestant. believe it or not, a sore throat is a type of pain. a pain reliever will help with the sore throat as well as any aches you may be experiencing. when you say ’sinuses’ i’m assuming you have a stuffy nose. a nasal decongestant (ie. pseudophedrine or phenylephrine) will relieve any swelling or pain in the nasal passages. Most cold and sinus products like Advil Cold and Sinus, Tylenol Cold Multi symptom, or generic equivalents are good at battling these symptoms. If you’re suffering from a runny nose, then you might want to take a antihistimine like claritin (generic is loratidine) or benadryl (generic is diphenhydramine) as well.
